NCAA basketball '11
Rick Reilly asks "describe this college basketball season in a few words", with no hesitation I reply "balanced and weak." Who is an elite team? No one, who is a great team? No one. Ohio State, not a great team, a very good team but not great. They squeaked out victories against Penn State, Minnesota and won a nail biter against Northwestern. They have an inside presence, leadership and good shooting, but no bench aside from two mediocre freshman. They don't have an elite guard. Pittsburgh is not a great team, they already lost and one of their few elite talents as a team is rebounding, see how far that gets ya! No Big East team is elite and no team will power through other teams like it's no big deal. The closest team that I have seen to being great is the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas is anchored by the Morris brothers and by a stud freshman, Josh Selby. Kansas will be a very good team come March. The two most overrated teams are San Diego State and BYU. San Diego State, they aren't great and they lost to BYU. BYU is not even a very good team they are even a questionable good team. The truth is they aren't a team they are a one man show. Jimmer Fredette is good in college but is going no where in the pro's. Jackson Emery is horrible and they have no big men inside to compete with a Powerhouse. Any very good team can roll over them. You want to know the secret pressure Jimmer and make him give it to mediocre players like Jackson Emery and Brandon Davies. I don't want to hear that Jimmer will be good in the pro's, he will be garbage. He can't pass so he obviously won't play point guard. The one successful player that makes a living solely off shooting is Ray Allen and Jimmer isn't nearly as talented as him, in fact I have troubling even comparing the two. The good thing about no elite teams this year in college basketball, come March it will be Madness.

I agree with everything said here except the idea that all you have to do is "pressure" Jimmer. He is the focus of the whole defense from the time he crosses half court (whether he has the ball or not)... come tourney time everyone seems to be in agreement that the two most important things are "guard play" and the presence of "a star" on the team.... that being said I think BYU still gets knocked out just before the sweet 16 and San Diego gets knocked out in the sweet sixteen... but obviously I'll be crossing my fingers for more than that.... I can't picture Jimmer doing anything in the pros either, but he'll get his shot and that's pretty crazy to think about when you're staring at a picture of the the overweight, super-white, 10 year old little doe-boy version of Jimmer who set that as a goal 11 years ago.... quit hating on jimmer and enjoy "the show" with me!
ReplyDeleteI don't hate Jimmer. I agree he is an amazing college scorer and fun to watch him and his lucky shot. He is a very good college player and it will be interesting to see whether or not he can carry them through the tourney.
