The over priced rental fee

Carlos Beltran was supposed to be the savior for the Giants, the bat that propelled them to winning by more than one run per game. He was supposed to guarantee them another world series ring and make them the favorites to repeat. So far he hasn't done anything except make them worse. They are 4-12 so far with Beltran in the lineup. They gave up way too much to get him, their number one pitching preospect Zach Wheeler. I know many disagree with me, including an incredible, acclimated sports writer in Craig Ford, but I will tell you why. Wheeler is a big arm, young talent that the Giants used a first round pick on. I would have rather given up Jonathan Sanchez and a mediocre prospect then ship away an incredible prospect. The Giants should have never traded for Beltran, but rather Hunter Pence. Pence is a younger, quicker, better fielding, and better average hitter than Beltran. Instead, Pence was traded to the already stacked phillies in exchange for mediocre prospects, none the caliber of Wheeler.

Beltran is what I like to call a 3 month rental. He will play with the Giants for 3 months, then leave after the season and join a different club. Much like many big stars do. This is the dumbest thing baseball teams are doing these days, trading away top prospects for 3 month rental guys. We saw it in the past with the Brewers trading 2 players that are now starters for the Indians, for a rental guy in CC Sabathia. Sabathia was great in his short time with the BrewCrew, but after 3 months bolted elsewhere to the Yankees.

My favroite example of this is the Atlanta Braves trading Neftali Feliz, Elvis Andrus and Mitch Moreland to the Rangers for a 3 month man in Mark Teixera. Andrus, Feliz and Moreland are all starters for the Rangers.

The bottom line is Hunter Pence was much cheaper, and would have benn a way better trade for the Giants to make. I do applaud the Giants for finally adding a hitter, but it just wasn't the right bat. Pence will be on the Phillies for a long time and will only getting better while Beltran is already peaking and aiming past his prime. My world series picks right now, this early in the season are the Phillies vs. the Tigers. It would be easy to pick the Red Sox vs. the Phillies (like everybody is doing) but im going out on a limb here and taking the Tigers. The Tigers are in a close division race with a much improving Cleveland team, and if the squeeze into the playoffs I look for them to make a deep run but eventually lose to the best team in baseball, the Phiting Phillies. My division winners are Texas, Detroit, Boston and wild card Yankees. In the NL, the Giants, Cardinals, Phillies and wild card to the very interesting Braves team. The Braves will play the Phillies in the NLCS and the ALCS will be the Tigers and Red Sox. I feel the Tigers will have a very good pitching staff with Verlander(guaranteed win), Scherzer and Rick Porcello. Those 3 are very good when they are on and their hitting is anchored by Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Austin Jackson.

  1. One more thing, with zito's eminent release, this frees a lot of cap room for off season signings.
