Wild(Card)Weekend
I realize that the MLB playoff teams have been set for a few days but the games that determined the last few sports were nothing short of legendary. The Red Sox had a one run lead heading into the ninth inning of their final game of the year, and a win means at least another game, but possibly a spot in the playoffs. They looked like a lock at that point to get into the playoffs, with having a one run lead and the Rays being down 7 runs to the Yankees in the 8th inning. From their on you couldn't script the rest of the night, it was nothing short of a fairy tale ending. The Sox brought in "then-reliable" closer Jonathan Papelbon and demanded he close the game out. He struck out the first batter...2 outs to go, the next batter came up and again, a strikeout so one out to go. No problem, the Red Sox thought, one out to go and the Rays up on the Yankees 7-2 at this point. Full count now, and Papelbonn pitches, double down the right field line, still no worries. Next batter, singles and the run scores, now a tied game. The Sox hearts are racing now as they look up at the scoreboard and see the Yankees only up 7-5 now heading into the 9th inning. From then on, the Red Sox nation and the entire franchise may have changed completely. Red Sox fans, look away now if you are reading this...it may bring nightmares. Papelbon pitches, with a runner on second. Fly ball to left, Crawford oh no! He can't make the play!! The Red Sox lose in a shocker, the Orioles play spoiler. It was a disappointment of major proportions. The Sox, already shocked, go back to the locker room hopeful that the Yankees can close out the Rays in the 9th. They turn on the television to fin the Yankees and Rays in extra innings now and immediately begin to, once again sweat bullets. The moment that the Sox and Red Sox nation will never forget is about to come. Evan Longoria steps up to the plate and hits a walk off home run that puts the Rays in the playoffs and knock the Red Sox out of the playoffs. It was possibly the most disappointing season of all time with so much expectations on the highly talented Red Sox team. This Sox team had the most talent in the Major Leagues this season but couldn't get it done. There have already been aftershocks felt from this loss with the Sox manager Terry Francona leaving the team after 9 years. He told media that the players didn't buy into him and his staff and all in all they were just unmotivated. It was only a game that the Sox loss but because of the importance of the game, there will be many changes coming to this Red Sox team.
